The NIH calls for applications for its Director's New Innovator Award Program. This program supports early-career investigators who propose innovative, high-impact projects (no preliminary data required).

The NIH Director's New Innovator Award supports highly creative new investigators who propose innovative projects with the potential for unusually high impact.

The NIH Director's New Innovator Award program is different from traditional NIH grants. It is designed specifically to support creative new investigators with innovative research ideas at an early stage of their career when they may lack the preliminary data required for an R01 grant. The emphasis is on innovation and creativity; preliminary data are not required, but may be included. No detailed, annual budget is requested in the application.

Requirements

  • Early stage investigator with no R01 or equivalent NIH grant
  • Within 10 years of doctoral degree or medical internship/residency
  • No preliminary data required
  • Awards up to $300K per year for up to 5 years
